Fabulous Crepes, Kawaii Crepe
Kawaii Crepe consistently stood out when passing through Osborne Street on my drives home. Night, day, sun or rain; a healthy stream of customers and crepe lovers adorned the bright and fun destination in the heart of the village. Buoyed by late hours and high praises, Kawaii Crepe has pigeon-holed itself as a premier late night snack alternative, one that I cannot believe took me this long to enjoy.
There could not be a more central location on Osborne Village, as anyone passing through cannot miss the warm glow of the fluorescent neon signs. The cavernous interior is laid out simply: a row of booth style seating interspersed with smaller tables. As if its popularity has outgrown its capacity, there is indeed a sense of claustrophobia as one squeezes themselves in the tight seating arrangement.
The menu is divided simply into savoury, sweet and breakfast crepes. And while you will find the classics here, what sets Kawaii apart are the many unique variants, like the TLB (Tomato, Lettuce, Bacon) or the Morning Sunshine (Bacon, Cheese and Eggs your way). For those creative or wanting something new, there is also the option of creating your own crepe filled with ones choice of savoury and sweet components.
Pump Up The Yam is a ridiculous name for a crepe, but aptly named. In truth the yam was the star of the dish lending a delicate roasted sweetness to the pieces of chicken and onion. Holding everything together was a creamy peppercorn mayo that lent a sharp contrast to the chicken and yam. One would of course be remiss to ignore the crepe, thin enough to not be overpowering but thick enough to hold everything in without falling apart. Yummy.
The Fruitella features fresh strawberries and nutella combined in a wonderfully thin and crispy crepe. The classic combination contrasts the sweet and tangy strawberries with the creamy and nutty nutella. Just unfortunate that the proportion of crepe to filling was underwhelming.
Kawaii Crepe is a tasty late night snack option for those in the Osborne Village. Taking the humble crepe and stuffing it with both old and tried classic flavours as well as new and bold creations, Kawaii Crepe has carved out a nice and tasty niche for itself. Definitely worth a try for those in the area.
